GYEON Q²M Suede – The Application Cloth for Precise Ceramic Coatings

GYEON Q²M Suede is a high-quality application cloth made of soft suede imitation, specifically developed for the even application of ceramic coatings, sealants, and liquid protection products. Available in three sizes (10×10 cm, 20×20 cm, and 40×40 cm), it allows for precise, controlled application on paint, glass, plastic, and rims.

Anyone who has applied a ceramic coating knows: the application cloth is one of the decisive factors for the final result. A cloth that is too thick is difficult to handle and distributes the product unevenly. A cloth that is too thin absorbs too little product and creates streaks. The wrong material reacts with the coating product and impairs curing. The right application cloth is not a detail – it is the key to a flawless coating.

It is a common misconception that many hobby detailers and even experienced professionals first suspect the product – and not the application cloth – when coating errors occur. Practice repeatedly shows that even the best coating product cannot unfold its full potential with the wrong cloth. Irregular product delivery leads to an uneven protective film, too quick drying of individual sections, and ultimately to high spots that are time-consuming to correct. Anyone who has had to polish a high spot knows that it takes more time than the entire coating application. The correct choice of application cloth is therefore not a luxury decision, but a practical necessity for reliable results.

The GYEON Q²M Suede was developed for exactly this requirement. The suede imitation is a material that has been considered the standard in the professional coating sector for years: it is soft enough not to leave scratches, has controlled absorbency that picks up exactly the right amount of product, and can be guided precisely – which is important for cross-hatch application on painted surfaces.

What many do not know: the application quality not only influences the optical result but also the longevity of the coating. A uniform, thin layer of a ceramic coating lasts longer and offers better protection than an unevenly applied thick layer. The adhesion of the coating to the substrate depends on complete, bubble-free contact between the coating material and the paint surface – and this complete contact is only made possible by the even distribution via the suede applicator cloth. In this sense, the cloth is not just an aid, but an integral part of the coating system.

At Detailing1, the Q²M Suede is the preferred applicator cloth for all GYEON coating products – but it is also well suited for coatings from other manufacturers. The three available sizes cover various application situations: from the small 10×10 cm cloth for precise detail work to the large 40×40 cm size for quick surface application.

Technology & Material: Why Suede Imitation?

The material of the GYEON Q²M Suede is not an ordinary microfiber cloth. Suede imitation – also called "Suede" or synthetic suede – has a specific surface texture that fundamentally differs from conventional microfiber. The fibers stand upright and are evenly densely packed, which allows for very even product delivery on the application surface. Unlike looped microfiber, with suede, there are no cavities in the fiber mesh where coating product could accumulate and clump.

This property is crucial for working with ceramic coatings. Ceramic coatings have high viscosity and dry very quickly on contact with air. An application cloth with an uneven fiber structure distributes the product irregularly and leaves high spots – areas where too much product has been applied and which are visible as dull or shiny streaks after curing. The Q²M Suede prevents this through its uniform, controlled fiber structure.

The structure of the suede imitation also ensures that the cloth does not generate static electricity during application, which would attract dust particles. This is particularly relevant when working in a dusty environment. Electrostatic charge is a known problem with some plastic applicators, which tend to attract dirt particles from the air and incorporate them into the still-wet coating layer. The suede material behaves neutrally in this regard.

Another important aspect: the suede imitation of the Q²M Suede is chemically stable against most solvents and curing agents used in the coating sector. Cheap microfiber cloths can be dissolved or chemically react with more aggressive coating products – which contaminates the product and impairs the result. The Q²M Suede is designed to withstand the chemical requirements of professional coatings.

An often underestimated advantage of suede imitation is its low intrinsic abrasion. When an application cloth is guided over an already cleaned, degreased paint surface, it must not leave any fine scratches itself. The uniformly dense, upright fiber structure of the suede ensures that the cloth glides instead of rubbing. Looped microfiber, on the other hand, can leave minimal traces on sensitive paints due to its irregular fiber structure – especially when re-working an area multiple times. This is relevant for ceramic coating application because the surface is wiped over multiple times to ensure even distribution.

In addition, the back structure of the Q²M Suede plays a role: the back of the cloth is firm and provides a stable guiding surface. Unlike pure suede cloths without back reinforcement, the Q²M Suede can be guided with constant pressure – important for an even layer thickness of the coating. A layer that is too thin does not offer optimal protection, a layer that is too thick causes high spots. The Q²M Suede helps to keep the layer thickness within the optimal range through controlled application.

The three formats are optimized for different applications: The 10×10 cm format (10 pieces) is suitable for details, spokes, trim strips, and small coating areas. The 20×20 cm format (10 pieces) is the most used all-round format for surface application on hoods, doors, and large areas. The 40×40 cm format (2 pieces) is for particularly fast application on very large areas or for beginners who prefer a larger guiding surface.

Correct Application: How to Use the Q²M Suede Correctly

The correct application technique is just as important for ceramic coatings as the right tool. The application cloth is an aid – the technique determines the result.

Preparation: The cloth should be dry and clean. Apply two to four drops of coating product directly onto the cloth or a small area of the cloth – never more than necessary. Too much product at once is one of the most common mistakes in ceramic coating and leads to difficult-to-remove high spots.

Application: The cloth is guided over the paint surface with even, light pressure – first in one direction (e.g., horizontally), then crosswise (vertically). This cross-hatch method ensures that the product is evenly distributed and no streaks or gaps appear. Work in small sections of about 50×50 cm and complete each section before moving on to the next.

Observe Flash Time: After application, the product must cure for a certain period (flash time), depending on temperature and humidity. During this time, put the cloth away and do not touch the surface. After the flash time, the product is wiped off with a fresh, clean microfiber cloth.

Temperature and Humidity: Both factors significantly influence the flash time and thus the timing of the application. At high temperatures (above 25°C) and low humidity, a ceramic coating dries very quickly – the flash time can drop to under 60 seconds. In this case, the application area should be chosen even smaller (25×25 cm instead of 50×50 cm), and the cloth should be fresh and lightly saturated. In cool conditions (below 15°C), the flash time is significantly extended, which gives more leeway for application. The ideal working window is 15–25°C and medium humidity. The suede cloth remains stable in all temperature ranges and dispenses the product evenly – an advantage over foam applicators, which become stiffer in cold weather and distribute the product less well.

After Use: Store the Q²M Suede immediately after use in a sealable plastic bag or dispose of it if it is completely saturated. Cured coating residues prevent a cloth from being completely cleaned and it should then be replaced.

Areas of Application: What the Q²M Suede is Used For

The suede application cloth was primarily developed for coating products, but it also finds application in other areas of car care.

Ceramic coatings are the main application area. Whether GYEON Q²M Mohs, Q²M Wetcoat, Q²M One, or another coating product from the GYEON range – the Q²M Suede is designed to optimally distribute all these products. Products from other manufacturers can also be applied excellently with the Suede.

For sealants and polymer sealants, the suede cloth is also ideal. These products have similar application requirements as ceramic coatings – even distribution, not too heavy application – and benefit from the controlled absorbency of the suede imitation.

For glass sealants, the small 10×10 cm format is particularly suitable. Glass has a uniform, smooth surface that requires precise application – especially at the edges of the windshield. The small format also allows for precise work on wiper nozzles, mirror housings, and side windows.

The Q²M Suede is also well suited for rim sealants – although rims pose a challenge due to their shape. Especially on the spokes and deeply recessed areas of the rim, the small 10×10 format is ideal: it can also be used in tight corners and enables complete sealing of the entire rim surface. Rim sealants are particularly useful because rims are heavily stressed by brake dust, temperature fluctuations, and stone chips – a good sealant significantly simplifies cleaning and protects the surface long-term.

The suede cloth is also suitable for applying leather sealants and plastic care products in the interior. The soft surface does not scratch sensitive interior surfaces, and the even product delivery prevents excessive application on seats and door panels.

Comparison: Q²M Suede vs. Other Applicators

In the segment of coating applicators, various tools are available – foam applicators, microfiber cloths, and suede. Each has specific advantages and disadvantages, and the suede cloth positions itself clearly as a special solution for demanding applications due to its material properties.

Foam applicators with a microfiber exterior are the most common alternative. They offer good product absorption and are easy to handle, but have the disadvantage that the microfiber structure makes product distribution less even than smooth suede. For ceramic coatings with a fast flash time, this is a relevant disadvantage.

Genuine suede (animal leather) is still occasionally used by vintage car restorers and some traditional coaters. It has similar properties to synthetic suede but is more expensive, more difficult to clean, and less consistent in processing. Synthetic suede like that of the Q²M Suede is the better choice for modern coating applications: consistent quality, defined absorbency, and chemical stability against modern ceramic coating formulations, which often work on a silicon dioxide basis.

Ordinary microfiber cloths are not ideal for coating application: the loop structure absorbs too much product, releases it uncontrollably, and cannot be guided evenly enough. High spots and streaking are common problems when using looped microfiber for ceramic coatings.

The GYEON Q²M Suede, as a suede imitation, offers the best combination of controlled absorbency, even product delivery, and easy handling. This is why professional detailers worldwide rely on suede applicators – and why GYEON uses exactly this material for its own coating program.

Who it's For and Purchase Recommendation

The GYEON Q²M Suede is aimed at anyone who applies ceramic coatings, sealants, or other liquid protection products to vehicles. Whether a professional detailer or an ambitious home detailer – the right application cloth is indispensable for a good result.

For beginners and home detailers, we recommend the 20×20 cm format as an entry point: large enough for quick application on body surfaces, handy enough for precise control. Always order more cloths than you think you need – with the first coating, you quickly learn that you use one to two cloths per vehicle, especially when working with a new product.

A practical tip for storage: Suede cloths should be stored dry and cool – ideal storage conditions are below 20°C and without direct sunlight. Unused cloths, if stored correctly, last indefinitely. Used but not yet fully saturated cloths can be stored in an airtight zip-lock bag for up to 24 hours and then reused – if the coating product has not yet fully cured. However, after the coating residues in the cloth have fully cured, it is no longer usable and should be disposed of. Therefore, when doing larger coating jobs, plan for enough cloths and order more rather than fewer.

For professional detailers, we recommend a mixed stock: several 20×20 cloths for the main surfaces, some 10×10 cloths for details, and one or two 40×40 cloths for particularly large surfaces or for coatings with a longer working time. The complete GYEON Q²M accessory program at Detailing1 complements the Q²M Suede with all other tools for a professional coating session – from applicator blocks to microfiber cloths and protective equipment.

Further information on correct coating application and the selection of the appropriate GYEON coating product can be found on the Detailing101 blog of Detailing1.

Practical Tip: Never store your Q²M Suede openly after use. Ceramic coating residues cure on contact with air, making the cloth stiff and unusable in minutes. Seal it immediately after use in an airtight plastic bag – or dispose of it directly if the cloth is completely saturated. A set of Q²M Suede in various sizes is a worthwhile investment for a coating session.
