Alkaline basic cleaning for coattable tire sidewalls

GYEON Q²M TireCleaner is an alkaline solution that removes old dressings, road grime, and leached antiozonants from tire sidewalls. It is the essential cleaning step before any tire coating or new dressing—without a clean sidewall, subsequent care products will not adhere properly. Not suitable for baked-on tar, whitewall tires, or painted surfaces.

Generously spray the dry, hand-warm tire until the sidewall is visibly wet. Let it soak for about 1 minute, then work it in with a hard tire brush in a circular motion—including the area between the tire and the rim flange. Rinse with a strong jet of water, let it drip dry for 2 to 3 minutes. Only apply dressing or coating when the sidewall looks matte dark gray. Do not use on hot tires or in direct sunlight. For heavy resin buildup, use two short applications instead of one long one.

Removing Old Dressings and Antiozonants from Rubber

What is GYEON Q²M TireCleaner? An alkaline tire cleaner that removes old dressings, road grime, and "bleeding" antiozonants from the rubber sidewall, preparing the tire for new care or a tire coating. Not suitable for alloy wheels, painted surfaces, or for pure blackening without subsequent dressing.

GYEON Q²M TireCleaner is an alkaline tire cleaner from GYEON that chemically removes "bleeding" rubber protectants and old care layers from the porous sidewall. The alkaline formulation (pH value around 12) breaks down silicone oil and wax components of common tire dressings and simultaneously dissolves the brownish-yellow antiozonants that the rubber exudes to the surface as UV protection.

The result is a residue-free surface on which a dressing or a tire coating like GYEON Q² TireExpress binds evenly — without streaking, without staining, and without the new treatment coming off again after a few days.

  • Removes brown bleeding instead of covering it. The yellowish-brown film on neglected tires is not dirt, but antiozonant — a wax that the rubber exudes for UV protection. A dressing only covers this layer and detaches from it again. The TireCleaner chemically removes it so that your next dressing actually sits on the rubber.
  • The basic cleaning before every tire coating. Every tire coating manufacturer assumes that the sidewall is residue-free. Silicone oils from cheap dressings and hardened road surfaces prevent the covalent bonding of the coating molecules. Without proper preparation, a double-digit coating price will only last a few weeks instead of the promised months.
  • Suitable for all common tire rubbers. Summer, winter, all-season, SUV, motorcycle — as long as it's black rubber, it tolerates TireCleaner. Not suitable for: whitewall tires, painted rims in contact with the sidewall, plastic wheel arch liners directly in the spray direction. Cover these beforehand or neutralize immediately.

Detailing1 Pro Tip: Always apply BEFORE wheel cleaner. If you clean the wheel first, wheel cleaner will run onto the tire — neutralizing some of the alkaline effect. Sequence: pre-clean tires, clean wheels, rinse everything together, dry, then dress or coat. Work on lukewarm tires, never in direct sunlight — otherwise the product will dry and leave streaks that you can only remove with a second application.

Dry tire. 60 seconds. Add brush.

Spray TireCleaner generously onto the dry, lukewarm tire until the sidewall is visibly wet and the product lightly foams. Foaming is normal and indicates that the alkaline reaction with the surfactants and old care residues is beginning.

After about 1 minute of dwell time, a tire brush takes over the mechanical work. Work in circular motions along the entire sidewall, including the narrow zone between the tire and the rim flange — where most of the hardened dirt accumulates. The chemical action alone loosens the surface film; the brush removes the dissolved material from the pores of the rubber where antiozonants have been embedded for several months.

Then rinse with a strong jet of water until the water runs clear. The tire can drip dry for 2 to 3 minutes — only when the sidewall looks matte dark grey instead of shiny wet is the surface ready to absorb your dressing or coating. Shiny wet means standing water in the pores, which will dilute any dressing you apply.

A common misconception: longer dwell times do not lead to deeper cleaning. After about 1 to 2 minutes, the reaction is complete, after which the product only dries. If a tire is heavily neglected, a second short pass is always better than a long first one — just like with wheel cleaner.

It dissolves dressings and antiozonants. Not tar.

Silicone oil-based tire care products, wax dressings, and "bleeding" antiozonants are the core area of TireCleaner — here it works reliably and without residue. The alkaline pH value breaks the bonds between care oil and rubber, without making the rubber itself brittle. This is the crucial difference to solvent-based cleaners, which also dissolve dressings but extract plasticizers from the rubber.

As a secondary application, TireCleaner has also proven its worth in our workshop on plastic wheel arch liners when old dressing streaks are present. Spray briefly, work in with a soft brush, rinse immediately — and the plastic will then cleanly accept a plastic dressing again. Important: on plastic, allow to act only for seconds, not minutes.

Where TireCleaner is not the right product: Baked-on tar, bitumen splashes, and asphalt residues do not react with alkalis. For this, you need a solvent-based tar remover, which you spray locally and not over the entire tire. Whitewall tires are also taboo — the white mixture reacts to alkaline cleaners with yellowing that cannot be reversed.

If you are looking for pure blackening without subsequent care, you are also mistaken. A TireCleaner cleans — it doesn't dress. After cleaning, the tire looks matte and somewhat grayish because the dissolved care layer is gone. This is intentional, but only the first step. If you want safety and long-term durability, combine TireCleaner and tire coating. If you want quick black shine and don't want to coat long-term, a simple tire dressing after cleaning is sufficient.

The basic cleaning before coating

The TireCleaner is not a weekend care product, but a basic cleaning. You use it when a tire has been neglected for a long time, when you are building a new dressing system, or when you want to apply a tire coating like GYEON Q² TireExpress. For normal car washing every two weeks, a standard shampoo plus fresh dressing is perfectly sufficient.

It is particularly strong as a preparation for a tire coating. Any coating only binds reliably if the rubber sidewall is open. Silicone oil from previous products seals the pores and prevents covalent bonding. The TireCleaner chemically opens this layer and makes the tire coating-ready. Many users skip this step and then wonder why an expensive coating has disappeared after 3 weeks instead of the promised 12 months.

As a complete solution, you combine TireCleaner with a tire care product or a tire coating. The clean sequence is: pre-clean tires with TireCleaner, treat wheels separately with a wheel cleaner, wash car, dry, then apply dressing or coating. For coating, allow 24 hours for curing before the vehicle is back on the road — otherwise you will wash off the uncured layer in the first rain.

Financially, this works out as follows: A 500 ml bottle of TireCleaner is sufficient for approximately 80 to 120 basic tire cleanings, depending on tire width. For 4 tires per vehicle, that's 20 to 30 basic vehicle cleanings. If you do a basic cleaning of your vehicle twice a year and otherwise maintain it normally, one bottle will last for several years — or cover a workshop season of 6 months with about one vehicle per week.

GYEON Q²M TireCleaner in the Detailing1 tire system lineup

Why GYEON Q²M TireCleaner is our standard

At Detailing1, we have used several alkaline tire cleaners in parallel — from Koch Chemie, Sonax, and GYEON. The Q²M TireCleaner has proven to be the most reliable compromise between cleaning power, rubber compatibility, and efficiency. The formulation is aggressive enough to dissolve "bleeding" antiozonants in one pass, but not so aggressive that it permanently hardens the rubber.

Especially customers who come from the GYEON coating world appreciate the system loyalty. The TireCleaner is part of a coordinated GYEON tire system consisting of a basic cleaner, dressing, and coating — the three products work chemically together and leave no incompatibilities, as often occur when mixing different manufacturers. Those who apply Q² TireExpress or Q²M TireBlack get the best adhesion with TireCleaner as preparation.

The most common user error we see: TireCleaner is used in direct sunlight or on hot tires after a highway drive. Both drastically reduce the effect because the product dries before it can react. The tire MUST be lukewarm or colder. If you want to clean immediately after a long drive, wait at least 30 minutes or cool the tires with water before using TireCleaner.

Once you have internalized this — cold tire, short dwell time, brush for support, second pass for heavy soiling — you will work cleaner permanently and at the same time extend the durability of any dressing and coating you apply afterwards. The TireCleaner is not a beauty product, but a foundation. Everything that comes after will last as long as the foundation was clean.

Frequently Asked Questions about GYEON Q²M TireCleaner

What is GYEON Q²M TireCleaner?

GYEON Q²M TireCleaner is an alkaline tire cleaner from the GYEON Q²M maintenance line. Its formula breaks down silicone oil and wax components from old dressings and dissolves the brownish-yellow antiozonants that the rubber sweats to the surface for UV protection. The result is a coating-ready sidewall—the foundation for any dressing and any tire coating like the GYEON Q² TireExpress.

How is TireCleaner applied?

Spray generously onto dry, lukewarm tires until the sidewall is visibly wet. Allow to dwell for about 1 minute, then work in with a stiff tire brush in circular motions—including the area between the tire and the rim flange. Rinse off with a strong stream of water and allow to drip dry for 2 to 3 minutes. Only when the sidewall looks matte dark grey instead of glossy wet is it ready for dressing or coating.

What is the difference from an all-purpose cleaner?

An all-purpose cleaner is formulated for painted surfaces and leaves rubber-specific residues untouched. Caked-on silicone dressings and migrated antiozonants sit deep in the rubber pores—they can only be removed with an alkaline formula that works on rubber without making the mixture brittle. For a tire without a dressing history, APC is sufficient. However, if silicone-based tire care has been used, you won't be able to remove the separating film without TireCleaner.

Is TireCleaner compatible with all tire and paint surfaces?

Suitable for black tire rubber—summer, winter, all-season, SUV, motorcycle. Not suitable for white wall tires, painted aluminum rims, or rubber seals with prolonged exposure. The alkaline pH value can dissolve clear coat and irreversibly yellow white tire compounds. If the product gets on the rim or paint, rinse immediately with water. Order of application in practice: first tires, then rim cleaner, rinse everything together.

What is the most common mistake when applying?

TireCleaner is often used in direct sunlight or on hot tires after a highway drive. Both drastically reduce its effectiveness because the product dries before it can react—resulting in visible streaks and white edges. The tire must be dry and lukewarm. After highway drives, wait at least 30 minutes or cool the tires with water before using TireCleaner.

How economical is TireCleaner and how often should it be applied?

A 500 ml bottle is sufficient for approximately 80 to 120 tire basic cleanings, depending on tire width—which means about 20 to 30 vehicles. TireCleaner is not a weekly product, but a basic cleaning: 2 to 4 applications per year are sufficient—at seasonal changes, before a tire coating, and when the sidewall visibly turns brown. In between, use shampoo plus fresh dressing. Shelf-stable for 24 months unopened.

Application of GYEON Q²M TireCleaner

Basic Cleaning before Dressing and Coating

Spray the TireCleaner undiluted onto the dry, lukewarm tire — generously, until the entire sidewall is visibly wetted and the product slightly foams. Wet tires dilute the formula and weaken the reaction; hot tires after highway driving will cause the product to dry before it can take effect. After driving, wait at least 30 minutes or cool the tires with water.

After about 1 minute of dwell time, a stiff tire brush performs the mechanical work. Work in circular motions over the entire sidewall, including the narrow zone between the tire and the rim flange — this is where most of the ingrained dirt is located. The chemicals dissolve the surface film, and the brush removes residues from the rubber pores. Longer dwell time does not lead to deeper cleaning, because the reaction is complete after 1 to 2 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly with a strong jet of water from top to bottom until the water runs clear. Then let it drip dry for 2 to 3 minutes — only when the sidewall looks matte dark grey instead of glossy wet is the surface ready for absorption. For heavily neglected tires, a second short pass is always more effective than an extended dwell time on the first. Finally, apply a dressing or a tire coating such as the GYEON Q² TireExpress.

Order in practice: first, thoroughly clean the tires with TireCleaner, then clean the rims separately, wash the vehicle, dry it — and only then dress or coat. If you clean the rim first, rim cleaner will run over the tire and neutralize part of the alkaline effect. For coating, allow 24 hours for curing before the vehicle is exposed to rain again.

Notes: TireCleaner does not react with baked-on tar or bitumen — for this, you need a solvent-based tar remover that you spray locally, not over the entire tire. Whitewall tires are a no-go; the white compound will irreversibly yellow with alkaline cleaners. Do not work in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 25 °C, otherwise the product will dry and leave streaks. Wear protective gloves and eye protection; in case of skin or eye contact, rinse with clear water. Store in a dark, frost-free place between 5 and 25 °C, unopened shelf life of at least 24 months. Store spray bottle with the head facing upwards to prevent the pump mechanism from clogging.
