Maximum cleaning performance for flawless results without compromise

TheKoch-Chemie Reactive Rust Removeris an advanced, acid-free rust remover that, thanks to its unique formula of reactive agents and high-performance surfactants, quickly and effectively combats stubborn rust and metallic dirt. Its pH-neutral composition ensures that the material is cleaned gently, while the violet color reaction makes the cleaning success visible. Ideal for anyone who values thorough and gentle care of their vehicles.

Spray undiluted onto the cold, dry surface and allow to work for 3–6 minutes. For rims, work from the bottom up to prevent the gel from running over treated areas. A purple discoloration indicates a reaction with iron particles — if there's no discoloration, there's no rust film. Afterward, rinse with a strong jet of water. A second application is more effective than a longer single application. Approximately 100 ml per four rims. Wear gloves, store frost-free.

Dissolve iron fallout chemically with the Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover, without touching your paint

What is the Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover? An acid-free iron fallout remover with a violet bleeding effect that chemically binds and dissolves iron particles on paint, glass and wheels — no mechanical scrubbing. Not made for tar, oil films or baked-on brake dust from race brake setups.

Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover is a pH-neutral iron fallout remover from Koch-Chemie in Unna, working through the active ingredient ammonium mercaptoacetate — the ammonium salt of thioglycolic acid. This ingredient reacts chemically with iron(III) oxides, the kind that show up as iron fallout on paint and as brake residue on wheels. The reaction becomes visible as a violet bleeding effect: wherever the solution turns colour, iron particles are being bound and lifted off the surface.

That sets the Rrr apart from acid-based iron fallout removers, which work faster but can leave irreversible damage on sensitive surfaces like polished aluminium or chrome wheels. At pH 7.5 the Reactive Rust Remover stays in the neutral range, so it goes on paint, glass and every common wheel type — no material research up front.

  • The colour change is your progress check. The violet bleed shows you in real time where iron particles sit and when they're dissolved. That kills two common mistakes: rinsing off too early before the job's done, and needless extra work with the brush. At pH 7.5 the formula is dialled in so it leaves no damage on clear coat, glass or painted wheels.
  • Gel cling for vertical panels. The consistency is deliberately thicker than a lot of competitors. The gel clings to sidewalls, fenders and wheel spokes without running straight off — and that stretches the effective contact time on the surface. Day-to-day, about 100 ml covers four 18-inch wheels.
  • Cherry scent instead of sulphur stink. The typical egg smell of thioglycolate products is clearly toned down here by benzaldehyde. That matters when you're working in an underground car park, with the garage door shut, or at a wash bay next to other people. You'll notice the smell, but it's nothing like classic iron fallout removers.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Always spray onto cold, dry surfaces. Wet panels dilute the gel and cut the contact time badly — the active ingredient gets rinsed away before it can react. Above 25 °C, hose the panel down briefly first, let it dry, then lay the Rrr on. Letting it dry out is the most common mistake: the gel leaves residue you then have to remove mechanically. Better two short passes of 3 minutes than one long one.

Spray on, violet, rinse off. 3 to 6 minutes.

The Reactive Rust Remover goes on undiluted onto the surface you want to treat and works there for 3–6 minutes. The violet colour change starts after about 10 seconds at the spots with the highest iron concentration.

On wheels, work from the bottom up so the gel doesn't run over areas you've already treated and stretch the dwell time there out of control. Cover spokes, barrel and wheel bolts. On paint, spray wide and even — bonnet and roof in passes, not in spots. Once the dwell time is up, rinse off with a strong jet of water. The Koch-Chemie spray head doses precisely and evenly, without dribbling or spitting.

A common misconception: leaving it on longer than 6 minutes gets you no extra cleaning. The active ingredient ammonium mercaptoacetate is saturated after that — it has reacted with every iron(III) ion it can reach. If residue is still visible after the rinse, a second pass beats a longer dwell time. On the car care forum, detailers report that the first pass without a brush already dissolves 80 % of the contamination.

For stubborn spots between the spokes, a wheel brush helps to spread the product — not to scrub. The chemical reaction does the work; the brush just carries the active ingredient into areas the spray jet can't reach directly. After rinsing, check the result visually: if you still see violet streaks, there's iron fallout sitting there. A third pass only pays off on paint — on wheels the leftover bit is usually quicker to take off mechanically.

Koch-Chemie Rrr iron fallout remover being applied to a wheel

The Rrr dissolves iron fallout on paint. Baked-on brake dust, no.

The Reactive Rust Remover reliably dissolves fresh to medium-age iron fallout — that's its core ground. On paint after parking next to railway lines, under industrial exhaust or along busy roads, the active ingredient reacts with the embedded iron particles and lifts them out of the clear coat without touching the paint structure. It works on glass too: iron fallout on the windscreen dissolves just as reliably as on paint.

On wheels it removes regular brake dust from standard pads in one pass. The colour change does the sorting for you: iron particles react violet, while organic muck like tar or oil doesn't change colour — so you see straight away what the Rrr can't shift. For tar spots you'll need a separate, solvent-based tar remover.

A side effect detailers on the car care forum report: after cleaning, wheels show a bit of beading, the surface sheds water for a while. That comes from the high-performance surfactants in it (5–15 % anionic surfactants per the safety data sheet), which leave a thin protective film. This effect is no substitute for a dedicated wheel sealant, but it's a nice bonus with regular use every two weeks.

Where the Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover hits its limits: iron fallout that's been sitting untreated on the paint for 6+ months has worked its way deeper into the clear coat. A single pass rarely does it here — plan for two or three. One customer on TrustedShops grumbled that "iron fallout was still there" — that typically happens with very old fallout that no chemical cleaner fully dissolves in one pass. After that, a clay bar can take off the last bits mechanically.

For extreme brake dust from performance brake setups or ceramic pads, the acid-based Reactive Wheel Cleaner is the stronger call — though with the material limits of an acid cleaner on polished or anodised aluminium. If you want safety on every surface, reach for the Rrr. If you want maximum cleaning power on tough, painted wheels, grab the Reactive Wheel Cleaner. And if you want to tackle iron fallout and brake dust on wheels at the same time, the Rrr is the more universal answer — it does both, just not the extreme stuff.

Your iron fallout workflow after railway lines and industry

The Reactive Rust Remover is the right call for anyone dealing with iron fallout on paint on a regular basis — commuters along rail routes, residents in industrial areas, cars that permanently park next to tracks or steelworks.

As a full routine, you use the Rrr before the car shampoo: dissolve the iron fallout chemically first, then the normal wash. That's the most efficient workflow, because the Rrr clings and works best on a dry surface. If your car is ceramic-coated, you can use the Rrr without worry — pH 7.5 doesn't attack the coating. The opposite, really: iron fallout under a coating is the bigger problem, because it lodges there and undermines the coating from below.

For fleet use or commercial detailing, Koch-Chemie also offers the Rrr as a 5 kg canister and an 11 kg container. With regular use every 2–4 weeks, the 500 ml bottle is gone after 4–5 cars. The 5 kg canister pays for itself from the second month with daily use — provided you've set up a refill process with spray bottles.

On polished, unsealed aluminium the active ingredient can cause light tarnishing — that comes off with a metal polish, but a test on a hidden spot is a must. On painted wheels, clear coat and glass, the pH of 7.5 is harmless.

Gloves are still a must — the ammonium mercaptoacetate in the Rrr is classified as skin-sensitising under the CLP regulation (H317) and can trigger allergic reactions on repeated skin contact. Eye protection is recommended, as the product can cause serious eye irritation (H319). Use the Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover every 2–4 weeks and you keep your iron fallout under control for good, and stop iron particles from working their way deeper into the clear coat.

Frequently Asked Questions about Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover "Rrr"

What is Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover?

The Reactive Rust Remover "Rrr" from Koch-Chemie is a pH-neutral iron remover based on ammonium mercaptoacetate. It chemically dissolves iron particles from paint, glass, and rims — visibly indicated by a violet color change. At pH 7.5, it is acid-free and gentle on materials, suitable for use on all common surfaces.

How do I properly apply the Rrr Iron Remover?

Spray undiluted onto the cold, dry surface and let it work for 3–6 minutes. The violet discoloration shows where iron particles are being dissolved. Then rinse off with a strong jet of water. For rims, work from bottom to top so that the gel does not run over already treated areas.

What is the difference between Reactive Rust Remover and Reactive Wheel Cleaner?

Rrr is pH-neutral (pH 7.5) and safe for all surfaces — paint, glass, polished aluminum, chrome. The Reactive Wheel Cleaner is acidic and removes heavier brake dust, but should not be used on sensitive rim surfaces such as polished or anodized aluminum.

Is Rrr suitable for ceramic coatings and polished aluminum?

Rrr can be used without hesitation on ceramic-coated paint — pH 7.5 does not attack any coatings. On polished, uncoated aluminum, the active ingredient can cause slight tarnishing. A test in an inconspicuous area is recommended here. It is completely safe on painted rims, clear coat, and glass.

What happens if Rrr dries on the surface?

Drying out is the most common application error. The gel forms visible residues that then have to be removed mechanically. Do not leave it on for longer than 6 minutes — the active ingredient is saturated after this time. At temperatures above 25 °C, briefly spray the surface beforehand, let it dry, and then apply Rrr in shorter intervals.

How economical is Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover?

Approximately 100 ml is sufficient for four 18-inch rims in one application. The 500 ml bottle will thus be used up after 4–5 complete vehicles. With regular use every 2–4 weeks, the 5 kg canister pays off from the second month in commercial use.

Application of Koch-Chemie Reactive Rust Remover "Rrr"

Spray, purple, rinse — the complete workflow

Spray Rrr undiluted onto the cold, dry surface. Wet surfaces dilute the gel and significantly shorten the contact time — the active ingredient will be rinsed off before it can fully react. At temperatures above 25 °C, briefly spray the surface beforehand, let it dry completely, and then apply Rrr.

When working on rims, proceed from bottom to top so that the gel does not run over already treated areas. Include spokes, rim well, and wheel bolts. On paint, spray broadly and evenly — on the hood and roof in sections, not point by point. The purple discoloration begins after about 10 seconds in areas with the highest iron concentration.

After 3–6 minutes of exposure, rinse with a strong jet of water. Do not leave on for longer — the active ingredient ammonium mercaptoacetate is saturated after this time. If residues are still visible after rinsing, a second pass is more effective than extended exposure time.

For stubborn areas between the spokes, a rim brush helps with distribution — not for scrubbing. The chemical reaction does the work; the brush merely distributes the active ingredient to areas that the spray jet does not directly reach. Dosage: approximately 100 ml for four 18-inch rims.

Notes: Rrr dissolves fresh to moderately old flash rust and regular brake dust — but not burnt-in brake dust from sports braking systems or tar spots. On polished, unsealed aluminum, the active ingredient can cause slight tarnishing — test in an inconspicuous area beforehand. Gloves are mandatory: Ammonium mercaptoacetate is a skin sensitizer (H317) according to the CLP regulation. Eye protection is recommended (H319). Store frost-free between 5 and 30 °C.
