What is the Aluminium-Teufel Red? An acidic wheel cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH with an extremely low pH of 0.55 to 1.0 — the aggressive tool for extreme baked-on brake dust on intact clearcoat-sealed steel and alloy wheels. The formula is built on phosphoric acid (CAS 7664-38-2) and hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647-01-0), backed up by citric acid as a chelating agent and non-ionic surfactants (Capryl Glucoside, Trideceth-C8). Don't mix it up with the acid-free green Alu-Teufel Spezial — the Red one is the emergency cleaner for neglected wheels, not your weekly upkeep. Strictly for intact painted wheels only — uncoated, anodised or polished metal gets etched beyond repair. Maximum dwell time 1 to 3 minutes, no colour-change indicator.
Aluminium-Teufel® (Red) is the acidic emergency version from TUGA Chemie and holds a bit of a special place in the range. The pH is officially listed at 1 to 2, but independent measurements in the detailing community show readings down to 0.55 — a heavily acidic zone built to chemically break down inorganic compounds like iron oxides from brake dust, sintered metal particles and mineral deposits.
TUGA Chemie out of Osnabrück has been making these formulas in Germany for decades, supplying commercial detailers, workshops and serious home enthusiasts across the DACH region.
The formula is a mix of two mineral acids and one organic acid: phosphoric acid bites into rust and iron oxides brilliantly and can (in certain contexts) passivate metal surfaces through phosphating. Hydrochloric acid is the very strong mineral acid that does the aggressive work of breaking down extremely baked-on brake dust. Citric acid acts as a chelating agent, keeping dissolved metal ions in suspension and stopping water spots after the rinse. The surfactant components (Capryl Glucoside, Trideceth-C8) are non-ionic and drop the surface tension — the acid works its way deep into porous grime structures.
Unlike the green Alu-Teufel Spezial version, this cleaner has no working indicator — the red colour is purely cosmetic. For you that means the chemical reaction is impossible to read by eye. You have to work strictly by the clock and never go over the 3-minute maximum dwell time under any circumstances.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: What we see day-to-day in front of our Nordhorn showroom: before every job with the Aluminium-Teufel Red we run a clearcoat test on the inner barrel of the wheel. If the clearcoat goes matt or whitish marks show up, the seal is damaged and the red devil is off the table — the acid would etch the bare aluminium underneath beyond repair. On top of that, we run a 1:1 dilution in distilled water as standard. That halves the bite, stretches the usable dwell window to 5 minutes instead of 3, and is plenty for 80 percent of the "extreme" cases. You only need it neat when the green Alu-Teufel Spezial fails on wheels left for months — and even then strictly with a stopwatch, acid splash goggles (NOT standard safety glasses!), acid-resistant nitrile gloves and long sleeves. If you don't have a pressure washer, give the red devil a miss completely — a bucket rinse won't neutralise the acid.
The standard workflow mostly asks for more discipline than pH-neutral cleaners do. The wheels have to be fully cooled to ambient temperature — if the car's in direct sun, move it into the shade or do the job in the early morning or evening. Before you apply, pre-rinse roughly with clear water or a pressure washer so loose dirt particles don't dilute the acid concentration against the wheel material.
Lay the Aluminium-Teufel Red on evenly from about 20 to 30 centimetres away, working from the bottom up. The direction matters: work top to bottom and you create concentration gradients and runs that re-trigger reactions on already treated spots — you'll see it as patchy staining. Be especially careful on the inner faces of the wheel, where the clearcoat protection is often thinner than on the show face.
Dwell time is strictly 1 to 3 minutes — not a second longer. Use a stopwatch, don't go "by feel". On heavily crusted spots a second pass after a pressure rinse makes more sense than a longer first dwell. Never agitate with brushes or woolies during the dwell — the acid works on its own, and mechanical movement just spreads it onto previously untouched clearcoat areas.
Then rinse off absolutely clean with a sharp pressure-washer jet. First from the bottom up, then with clear water from the top down. Rinse the back of the wheel and the gaps between the spokes thoroughly too — acid residue in hidden areas leads to corrosion on brake callipers, wheel bearings and bare steel parts. If you don't have a pressure washer to hand, the Aluminium-Teufel Red is the wrong shout entirely — a bucket-and-sponge rinse won't neutralise the acid cleanly.

The Aluminium-Teufel Red is cleared strictly for intact clearcoat-sealed wheels only — both steel wheels with powder coating and alloy wheels with a clearcoat finish. The condition is a complete, undamaged seal across the whole wheel including the inner barrel and the backs of the spokes. Micro-cracks in the clearcoat, stone-chip spots or flaked areas get used by the acid cleaner straight away as a way in — irreversible etching of the metal underneath is the result.
Strictly excluded are anodised alloy wheels (often on older sports models or in the tuning scene), polished alloy wheels with no clearcoat protection, diamond-cut wheels with a partly uncoated aluminium show face, matt wheels with powder coating in a matt finish (the acid attacks the surface texture and makes it glossy), carbon wheels or wheels with SmartRepair touch-up paint.
The reason on the material level: the phosphoric-hydrochloric acid combination attacks aluminium oxide layers directly, visible as a matt or whitish discolouration. On anodised surfaces the protective oxide layer is dissolved — irreversibly, no polish brings it back. On polished aluminium surfaces the microscopically smooth mirror finish goes grainy-matt after acid contact — a polishing shop has to rework the surface, costing 200 to 800 euros depending on the wheel set.
On brake callipers made of bare steel or sports brake systems with bare brake cylinders, you have to mask off with tape before use — acid overspray causes rust on the contact faces within a few days. Touch-up paints on repaired wheel edges are especially critical, because 1K paints from the smart-repair world often aren't fully acid-resistant.

Demand for acidic wheel cleaners in the DACH market tracks heavily with the twice-a-year tyre-change seasons in March/April and September/October. Before every tyre swap the wheels get a thorough clean before they go into storage — baked-on brake dust from the past season gets pulled out of workshops and home garages in this window, often as an emergency cleaner for wheels left untouched for months.
The second peak comes after especially salty winters (typically February/March in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland), when road-salt fallout and mineral deposits have set on the winter-tyre wheels. In the commercial space the Aluminium-Teufel Red also gets used for flash-rust removal on commercial vehicles, for clearing cement haze on construction-site trucks, and for reconditioning extremely neglected wheel stock at used-car detailers.
The 1-litre spray bottle at around 11 euros is meant for the odd emergency job — two to three uses a season on a badly neglected wheel set. With yearly use at a 1:1 dilution, one litre lasts roughly two to three years. The 5-litre canister at around 35 euros is the standard size for workshops and detailing businesses — per litre the price then works out at around 7 euros, which makes economic sense for weekly pro use in the peak tyre-change season.
Safety note (binding): the product is classified under GHS with H290 (may be corrosive to metals) and H314 (causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage). Acid splash goggles (not just standard safety glasses!), acid-resistant nitrile gloves, long-sleeved clothing and closed footwear are mandatory. On skin contact, rinse immediately with clear water for 10 to 15 minutes; on eye contact, flush the eyes immediately and call emergency services. Proper disposal goes through the EWC waste codes for acidic solutions — never into household waste or normal sewers. The cleaner is NOT suited to inexperienced home users — if you don't work with acid chemistry regularly, go for the acid-free green Alu-Teufel Spezial without hesitation.
Goes well with: all wheel cleaners in the range • Alu-Teufel Spezial Green (acid-free daily version) • TUGA detailing wheel brush

Not sure about TUGA Chemie Aluminium-Teufel® (Red) Wheel Cleaner? Get it explained:
Aluminium-Teufel Rot is TUGA Chemie's acidic emergency cleaner based on phosphoric and hydrochloric acid (pH 0.55-1.0). An aggressive tool for extremely baked-on brake dust on clear-coated wheels in good condition — when the acid-free green Alu-Teufel Spezial is no longer sufficient.
Test the clear coat beforehand in an inconspicuous area. The rim MUST be cold. Spray from 20-30 cm from bottom to top. STRICTLY 1-3 minutes exposure time (stopwatch). Never agitate with brushes during the exposure time. Rinse thoroughly with high pressure — including the back of the rim. Acid-resistant safety glasses + acid-resistant nitrile gloves are mandatory.
The RED one is acidic (pH below 1) and only for extremely baked-on brake dust on clear-coated wheels in good condition — an emergency cleaner. The GREEN Alu-Teufel Spezial is acid-free (pH 7-8) and approved for all wheel types — a weekly maintenance cleaner. The wrong wheel with Red will be IRREVERSIBLY etched.
Strictly excluded: anodized aluminum wheels (sport tuning), polished aluminum wheels without clear coat, diamond-cut wheels with uncoated visible sides, matte powder coating, carbon wheels, Smart Repair paint. A damaged clear coat layer (stone chips, micro-cracks) is also taboo — the acid will irreversibly corrode the underlying metal.
After 3 minutes, the water content evaporates, the acid concentration increases extremely — irreversible corrosion of the clear coat and the underlying aluminum. This happens in seconds on brake calipers heated to 200 degrees (after driving on the highway). A stopwatch is mandatory, never rely on feeling. Detailing practice often dilutes 1:1 with distilled water for more safety.
The 1-liter container is sufficient for around 6-8 undiluted applications (4 wheels per application) or 12-16 diluted 1:1 applications — so two to three years for a car with annual seasonal use. In the 5-liter canister, the price per liter drops to around 7 Euros. For workshop detailers doing quick tire changes, this is the standard size.
Before each application, perform a clear coat test on an inconspicuous area on the inside of the rim – if the clear coat becomes dull or develops whitish spots, the sealant is damaged and Aluminium-Teufel Rot is prohibited. Only for rims with intact clear coat sealing.
Rims MUST have completely cooled down to ambient temperature – never apply directly after driving on the motorway. In direct sunlight, move the car into the shade or clean in the morning or evening hours. Before application, pre-rinse roughly with clear water or a high-pressure cleaner.
Spray Aluminium-Teufel Rot evenly from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters, from bottom to top. Strictly adhere to an exposure time of 1 to 3 minutes, not a second longer – use a stopwatch, not guesswork. For heavily encrusted areas, perform a second pass after high-pressure rinsing instead of extending the first exposure time. Never agitate with brushes or sponges during the exposure time – the acid strength works automatically.
Then rinse thoroughly with a strong high-pressure water jet until absolutely no residue remains. First from bottom to top, then with clear water from top to bottom. Also rinse the back of the rim and the spaces between the spokes thoroughly – acid residues lead to corrosion on brake calipers and bare steel components. If you do not have a high-pressure cleaner, Aluminium-Teufel Rot is completely unsuitable for you.
Notes: Strictly excluded for anodized or uncoated aluminum rims, polished rims without clear coat protection, diamond-cut rims with partially uncoated visible surfaces, matte powder coating, carbon rims, or smart repair paint. Detailing professionals often dilute 1:1 with distilled water – this halves the aggressiveness while maintaining comparable effectiveness. Acid-resistant safety goggles (NOT just standard ones), acid-resistant nitrile gloves, and long-sleeved clothing are mandatory. Dispose of according to AVV (Waste Catalogue Ordinance) for acidic solutions. NOT for inexperienced private users – if unsure, opt for the green Alu-Teufel Spezial.
