Streak-free cleaning with Tugalin Glass-Devil from TUGA Chemie

Tugalin is the iconic blue glass cleaner from TUGA Chemie and is one of the most well-known products in German detailing. For us at Detailing1, it is the benchmark against which we measure all other glass cleaners. The formula cleans car windows, mirrors, displays, and shop windows streak-free in one pass, even with stubborn nicotine film, insect residue on the windshield, or greasy handprints on a touchscreen. Anyone who has seen the difference between a common household cleaner and Tugalin on a windshield understands why it can be found in almost every detailing workshop in Germany.

Streaks on glass do not occur because of dirty windows, but because of poor surfactants. If the cleaner dries faster than it wipes, the residues remain visible as a haze.

Tugalin has been in use in Germany since the 1970s and has earned a quiet cult status among workshops, car dealerships, and fleet operators. The characteristic blue color and the typical, slightly alcoholic scent are a part of everyday professional life for many detailers. The manufacturer TUGA Chemie from Goslar has been producing in Lower Saxony for decades and supplies, among others, the classic car dealership line and a large part of the independent workshops in German-speaking countries. There's a good reason why a glass cleaner can survive so long in such a competitive market: it works.

The effect is based on a balanced combination of isopropanol, surfactants, and a minimal proportion of non-ionic emulsifiers. The alcohol content ensures that the cleaner does not clump even on warm windows and simultaneously dissolves grease residues. The surfactants absorb these dissolved fats and bind them so that they can be picked up with a microfiber cloth. The emulsifier content is deliberately kept low because too much would leave a whitish haze when drying. This precise balance is what makes Tugalin so streak-free. It was developed for real workshop use, not for the laboratory.

Practical tip from Detailing1: Always use two different microfiber cloths for glass. A damp, short-pile glass cloth for working it in and a dry, long-pile cloth for polishing. Simply wiping without a second cloth is the main reason for visible streaks, not the cleaner. On the inside of the windshield, wipe from top left to bottom right in straight strokes, then follow with the dry cloth in one direction. This is the technique every good detailer has mastered.

The application is simple; the sequence determines the result. First, wash off coarse dirt so that no sand particles scratch the window. Spray Tugalin evenly onto the window to be cleaned from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters until a thin film forms. Don't skimp on the cleaner, but don't make it soaking wet either. Work with the damp glass cloth in straight, overlapping strokes. Never wipe in circular motions, as these make streaks more visible. Immediately after, polish with the dry cloth while the cleaner is still slightly damp on the window. If you wait too long, the surfactants will dry and need to be re-dissolved. For the outside of the windshield, it is recommended to first remove insects and tar with an insect remover before applying Tugalin. It is not an insect remover, but a cleaner for the final polish.

A quick note on the spray pattern: The red atomizer is deliberately adjusted to a fine, wide-spreading mist. This ensures an even film on the window and prevents individual drops from remaining visible later as calcified spots. If you replace the atomizer head with a coarser spray head, you will not get more efficiency, but worse results. This is one of the reasons why the original bottle remains the better choice from our point of view, even if the 5-liter canister is the more economical refill for daily use. An empty 1-liter spray head lasts for several bottles with normal use and can continue to be used.

On the inside of the windshield, Tugalin is particularly strong. The thin, greasy layer that accumulates there from interior plastic fumes (so-called fogging) and from the driver's breath is one of the most stubborn deposits in a car. A normal glass cleaner merely pushes it around; Tugalin lifts it and binds it in the cloth. This is precisely why we recommend cleaning the inside of the windshield at least twice a year, and more frequently for smokers or frequent drivers. The effect is immediately visible: driving at night becomes less strenuous because the window no longer scatters light when exposed to oncoming headlights.

Not on hot surfaces. Not on films. Not in torrents.

Tugalin is a cleaner, not a protector. It leaves no beading effect, no sealant, and no additional shine. After application, the window is clean and clear, but not impregnated. If you want this additionally, apply a separate glass sealant after cleaning. Tugalin and sealant complement each other but are different products with different tasks. Further note: On hot windows in the summer sun, the cleaner dries in seconds and leaves limescale stains from hard water residues. Always work in the shade or cool the window briefly with water beforehand. On tinted films, on stickered displays, and on matte screens with anti-reflective coatings, use only with a highly diluted concentration or, better yet, not at all, as the solvents can attack the coating. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Another practical point that many users underestimate: After cleaning with Tugalin, every glass surface appears significantly clearer than before, because the Tugalin formula also attacks the finest mineral deposits and silicone films that build up over time due to windshield wipers, rainwater, and car washes. Especially the wiper streak at the bottom edge of the windshield is usually a mix of lime, windshield washer additives, and fine tire abrasion from the wind. Tugalin reliably attacks all of this and then provides a surface on which fresh windshield wipers move significantly quieter and more smoothly. This effect is measurable if you drive with identical wipers for a single day after cleaning.

The glass cleaner for front, rear and interior

In the TUGA Chemie product range, Tugalin is the all-rounder for all glass surfaces on and in the vehicle. It complements the Kunststoff-Teufel for the cockpit, the Alu-Teufel Spezial for the rims and fits into the glass cleaning category. In the classic detailing sequence, Tugalin always comes last, when all other surfaces are finished. The reason: during every preceding work step, fine splashes can get onto the windows, which are then removed with Tugalin at the end. Anyone who goes through their car once a month will find daily use of Tugalin the most relaxed way to keep the windows clear, mirrors streak-free, and displays maintaining their factory contrast.

Tugalin is available as a 1-liter spray bottle with a red atomizer for household and garage use, and as a 5-liter canister for detailing and for anyone who cleans several vehicles per week. When stored correctly, the product is stable for at least 24 months. The temperature should be between five and thirty degrees to ensure the alcohol-based formula retains its streak-free properties. In case of contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with water; if swallowed, consult a doctor. Gloves are not strictly necessary for normal use, but those with sensitive skin should still wear them. After opening, the cleaner remains usable for several years, provided the bottle is stored sealed and upright. Tugalin is a classic without an expiration date in the minds of users, and for good reason. A set consisting of a 1-liter bottle and a 5-liter refill canister is the most economical option for anyone who uses it permanently and no longer wants to do without the blue original.
