Alkaline Interior Cleaner with Antistatic OEM Finish (pH 10)

Plastics Devil is TUGA Chemie's highly alkaline interior cleaner from Osnabrück with an electrolytic active principle. The pH value of 10 to 11 breaks down organic fats and nicotine film through alkaline hydrolysis, while the ionic surfactant matrix disrupts electrostatic bonds between dirt and plastic. Leaves a matte OEM finish and an antistatic protective layer. Approved for ABS, PP, PVC and rubber — strictly not for genuine leather, Alcantara and touchscreens.

Mandatory: dust or vacuum the cockpit with a soft brush – loose sand would otherwise cause micro-scratches. Apply 2 to 3 sprays onto a detailing brush or short-pile microfiber cloth (320 g/m²), never directly onto the cockpit. Work in with circular motions, let sit for 2 to 5 minutes. Wipe with a second damp microfiber cloth – otherwise surfactant residues will appear as streaks. Consumption 15 to 30 ml per square meter, store frost-free.

Car interior cleaner: Kunststoff-Teufel, alkaline with an antistatic finish

What is the Kunststoff-Teufel? A ready-to-use, highly alkaline interior cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH (Osnabrück) built on an electrolytic working principle. The pH sits between 10.0 and 11.0 — aimed squarely at the alkaline hydrolysis of organic fats, oils, nicotine film and soot. The surfactant matrix of 3-butoxypropan-2-ol, sodium alkane sulfonate, capryl glucoside and SLES, paired with the chelating agents iminodisuccinate and sodium tripolyphosphate, attacks dirt at the molecular level through electrostatic repulsion. It leaves a matte OEM finish and an antistatic protective layer. Strictly off-limits for genuine leather, Alcantara, uncoated aluminium and touchscreen displays.

Kunststoff-Teufel® is the interior cleaner from TUGA Chemie GmbH, positioned as the "do-it-all" between aggressive APC concentrates and pricey premium detailers. The formula is a water-based blend with 3-butoxypropan-2-ol (CAS 5131-66-8) as the organic glycol-ether solvent (up to 2.5 percent), sodium laureth sulfate as the anionic and capryl glucoside as the non-ionic surfactant, plus sodium alkane sulfonate as the primary heavy-duty cleaner against heavy oils.

The standout feature is the electrolytic working principle: the high concentration of ionic actives (iminodisuccinate, sodium tripolyphosphate as chelating agents) disrupts the electrostatic bonds between dirt particles and the plastic surface. On synthetic materials, dirt clings mainly through weak van der Waals forces and electrostatic attraction — the high ion concentration wraps the particles, flips their electrical charge and pushes them off the like-charged surface. That explains the "self-acting" cleaning the manufacturer documents, where dirt lifts off even without heavy mechanical scrubbing.

Unlike pure care products, the Kunststoff-Teufel leaves no greasy or glossy silicone finish. The antistatic residual layer dries dead matte and restores the plastic's OEM factory state — a real difference from cosmetic cockpit sprays that buy shine at the cost of the look.

  • Electrolytic mechanism for self-acting dirt release. The cleaner doesn't work mainly by mechanical lifting, but by ionic repulsion. On grained ABS hard plastics, polypropylene trim and PVC films, the low surface tension lets the solution creep into microscopic pores and pull dirt from where microfibre cloths can't reach.
  • Antistatic finish for 3 to 5 days. After wiping, a thin monolayer of film-forming surfactants stays on the plastic and drains off electrostatic charges — loose house dust and road grime stick less to your dashboard. On door sills or heavily used door cards, the film wears off faster through contact; in untouched spots it holds until the next clean.
  • 9 to 14 EUR per litre in the RTU container. The direct rival is Sonax Profiline MultiStar (pH 10.5–11.5, about 8.32 EUR/L as a concentrate), which has to be diluted 1:10 to 1:50 — the Kunststoff-Teufel saves you the error-prone dilution step. Koch-Chemie Mzr (pH 12.5, ~8 EUR/L concentrate) is even more alkaline with a higher damage risk if you mix it wrong. Gyeon Q2M VinylCleaner (pH 10, RTU) runs over 30 EUR/L in the boutique segment, and Dr. Wack A1 Tiefenpfleger (~60 EUR/L) is mainly a care product with no heavy-dirt cutting power.

Kunststoff-Teufel Hero

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Day-to-day, the classic mistake with the Kunststoff-Teufel is spraying it straight onto the dashboard. That throws overspray onto touchscreens and high-gloss trim — where the alkaline cleaner does irreversible damage. Anti-glare coatings on infotainment displays go permanently matte, oleophobic coatings disappear. The pro rule: never straight onto the cockpit, always lay 2 to 3 spritzes onto a detailing brush or a short-pile microfibre cloth (320 g/m², no plush), then work it in with circular motions. Before you wipe, vacuum first or blow the loose crumbs out with compressed air — otherwise every grain of sand turns into a micro-scratch the moment you wipe. Mask touchscreens and piano black up front with tape or film; it saves you the emergency cleanup with distilled water.

Spray onto the cloth, work it in, let it dwell, wipe clean.

The standard workflow starts with mechanical prep. Loose sand, crumbs and pine needles come off with a soft brush, compressed air or a vacuum — otherwise every further wipe works like sandpaper on the plastic. The button cluster on steering-wheel switches and the gaps between dashboard modules are especially critical.

Lay two or three spritzes of the Kunststoff-Teufel onto a clean detailing brush or a short-pile microfibre cloth (standard 320 g/m², no plush). Never straight onto the cockpit surface — that brings overspray risk and run marks. On badly soiled door cards or centre consoles you can spray the product on directly, but spread it straight away with the damp cloth.

Work it into the plastic texture with circular motions — the pressure is minimal, the cloth should glide. On grained ABS surfaces, work the recesses out with the brush, then go over them with the cloth. Dwell time is two to five minutes — on heavily baked-in nicotine film or old food grease along the lower edge up to ten minutes, but then re-wet in between so the product doesn't dry on.

After that, you have to wipe down with a second, clean and slightly damp microfibre cloth. This isn't optional — the alkaline surfactant residue has to be taken off with clean water, otherwise you get streaks and dried-on spots over time. On touchscreens, display edges and piano-black trim, dab off straight away with distilled water — never rub dry.

In a professional reconditioning workflow, the Kunststoff-Teufel is the prep step for a later plastic dressing with UV protection. Lay a care product on right after cleaning, without washing off the surfactant residue, and you risk a sticky, dust-grabbing paste. Without the pre-clean, the dressing would only sit on an old layer of grease.

Kunststoff-Teufel Application

ABS, PP, PVC and rubber yes. Genuine leather, Alcantara and touchscreens no.

The Kunststoff-Teufel is cleared for grained hard plastic in ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and polypropylene (dashboards, door sills, boot trim), headliners (carefully, without soaking the adhesive), rubber seals like door rubbers and window guides, plus films and tarpaulins in PVC. Outside too: unpainted bumpers, wheel-arch liners and black plastic spoilers — here the antistatic effect is especially welcome, since less dust clings.

Strictly ruled out, on the other hand, are four material groups. First, genuine leather and Alcantara: animal leather needs a slightly acidic pH of 4.5 to 5.5 to keep the collagen-fibre structure supple. The alkaline Kunststoff-Teufel strips the re-fatting natural oils, which leads to cracking and embrittlement over time. Synthetic leather can lose its plasticisers too. For leather you must use pH-neutral or slightly acidic specialist cleaners — Koch-Chemie Pol Star or similar dedicated leather cleaners are the right tool.

Second, uncoated aluminium: highly alkaline solutions can tarnish or oxidise unprotected or anodised aluminium. Rarely an issue inside, but watch out with matte aluminium trim in modern premium cars. Third, touchscreen displays: anti-reflective coatings and oleophobic (grease-repellent) coatings on infotainment screens are irreversibly damaged by the electrolyte cleaner — visible as permanent matting or clouding.

Fourth, soft-touch surfaces from the older VAG model generations (often on buttons and switches in the Golf VI, Audi A4 B8 and the like): heavily rubberised coatings tend to swell and turn sticky under the glycol-ether solvents. Test in an inconspicuous spot first here, or use a pH-neutral interior cleaner.

Kunststoff-Teufel Result

Spring detailing, winter prep and the industrial use case.

Demand for interior cleaners in the DACH market shows two clear seasonal peaks. The first lands in the spring detailing window between March and May, when grit salt fallout, soot marks and winter fogging all have to be tackled at once after the winter break. Interior fogging comes from dashboard plastics outgassing under heater air and condensation — a greasy film that creeps over every vertical interior surface through the winter months.

The second peak lands in winter prep between September and November, when door rubbers and seals get cared for ahead of the frost season. Here it's not just the cleaning that matters but the antistatic finish too, which stops the door rubbers freezing to the body overnight — cutting dust adhesion improves the seal in the door frame.

The 1-litre spray bottle at around 11 euros is the easy entry for one or two cars in a private household. At a quarterly full interior clean and a usage of about 50 ml per mid-size interior, one litre covers roughly 20 full cleans — five years for one car with strict care discipline.

The 5-litre canister at around 33 euros saves about 30 percent per litre and is the standard size for workshops, mobile detailers and households with three or more cars. For commercial detailers running ten to fifteen cars a week it's a four-to-six-week supply. The pump head on the 1-litre bottle unscrews and moves onto a separate empty bottle — the established fix, since the original 5 L canister itself isn't built for spraying.

Off-label, the Kunststoff-Teufel has made a name across the DACH region as an industrial cleaner. TUGA Chemie officially clears the product for industrial and household cleaning — blinds, garden furniture, heavily greased kitchen surfaces, even workbenches and machine panels. On the detailing forum dasdetailingforum.de it gets passed around regularly as the "secret all-purpose cleaner" that covers a smaller detailer's shop needs with a single product. Safety note for professional use: the product falls under the CLP regulation as skin-irritant and eye-damaging (H315, H319). The VOC content is below the declaration threshold. PPE with nitrile gloves and eye protection is mandatory under frequent use — the mandatory P-statements P280 and P305+P351+P338 are on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kunststoff-Teufel Interior Cleaner

What is Kunststoff-Teufel and what is it used for?

Kunststoff-Teufel is a highly alkaline interior cleaner from TUGA Chemie (pH 10-11) with an electrolytic principle of action. Its ionic surfactant matrix disrupts electrostatic bonds between dirt and plastic—providing self-cleaning without extreme scrubbing. It leaves a matte OEM finish and an antistatic protective layer.

How do I use Kunststoff-Teufel correctly?

Never spray directly onto the dashboard—apply 2-3 sprays onto a detailing brush or a short-pile microfiber cloth. Work into the plastic structure in circular motions. Allow to act for 2-5 minutes, then it is essential to wipe off with a second damp cloth—otherwise, surfactant residues will leave streaks.

What distinguishes Kunststoff-Teufel from Sonax MultiStar?

Kunststoff-Teufel is ready-to-use at pH 10-11 (~9-14 €/L), while Sonax MultiStar is a concentrate 1:10 to 1:50 at pH 10.5-11.5 (~8.32 €/L). TUGA eliminates the error-prone dilution process. Koch-Chemie Mzr is even more alkaline (pH 12.5, ~8 €/L concentrate) with a higher risk of damage. Gyeon Q2M VinylCleaner is RTU at pH 10 (~30-35 €/L) in the boutique segment.

Is Kunststoff-Teufel suitable for real leather?

Strictly no. Animal leather requires a slightly acidic pH (4.5-5.5) to maintain the suppleness of its collagen fiber structure. The alkaline Kunststoff-Teufel (pH 10-11) extracts the re-greasing natural oils, leading to long-term cracking and embrittlement. Even synthetic leather can lose plasticizers. For leather, use pH-neutral special cleaners (Koch-Chemie Pol Star).

What happens if Kunststoff-Teufel gets on a touchscreen?

Anti-reflection coatings and oleophobic (grease-repellent) coatings on infotainment displays are irreversibly damaged by electrolytic cleaners—visible as permanent matting or cloudiness. In case of overspray, immediately dab with distilled water on a soft microfiber cloth, never rub dry. Cover with film or tape before application.

How economical is Kunststoff-Teufel?

With a consumption of 15-30 ml per square meter, 1 liter is sufficient for about 30-60 complete interior cleanings of a mid-range vehicle—five years for a car with quarterly maintenance. In a 5-liter canister, the price per liter decreases by about 30 percent. For weekly workshop use, bulk containers are economically superior; transfer the pump head to a separate spray bottle.

Application of Kunststoff-Teufel Interior Cleaner

Never spray directly onto the cockpit — spray onto the cloth, work in, wipe off

Before each application, it is essential to brush off the cockpit with soft brush bristles, blow it out with compressed air, or vacuum it thoroughly. Loose sand and crumbs would act like sandpaper on the clear coat layer of hard plastics when wiping — visible as micro-scratches in backlight.

Apply two to three sprays of Kunststoff-Teufel onto a clean detailing brush or a short-pile microfiber cloth (standard 320 g/m², not plush). Never spray directly onto the cockpit surface — this causes an overspray risk on touchscreens, high-gloss trim strips, and the windshield, as well as streaks on textured ABS surfaces.

Work into the plastic structure in circular motions — the contact pressure should be minimal, the cloth should glide. For textured ABS surfaces, use a detailing brush to work into the depressions, then follow with a cloth. Allow to act for two to five minutes depending on the degree of contamination — for heavily ingrained nicotine film, up to ten minutes, then re-moisten in between.

Then, it is essential to wipe with a second, clean and slightly damp microfiber cloth. The alkaline surfactant residues must be removed with clear water, otherwise, streaks will form in the long term. For touchscreens, display edges, and piano lacquer trim, dab immediately with distilled water — never rub dry. In a professional workflow, Kunststoff-Teufel is the preparation ("prep") for subsequent plastic care with UV protection.

Notes: Strictly excluded for genuine leather and Alcantara (alkaline hydrolysis destroys collagen fibers, leading to cracks and embrittlement in the long term), uncoated aluminum (can tarnish), touchscreen displays with anti-reflective coatings (irreversible matting), soft-touch surfaces from older VAG model generations (swelling due to glycol ethers). CLP-classified as skin irritant (H315) and eye irritant (H319) — for frequent use, wear nitrile gloves and eye protection. Store frost-free, shelf life 24 months.
